Ethiopia denies Saleh to live in country.
SANA’A: Last week, several Yemen government sources close to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh announced that the fallen autocrat had decided to go into exile in nearby Ethiopia, adding that his personal belongings had already been shipped and a residence bought on the outskirts of the capital, Addis Ababa.
The Ethiopian government said on Saturday that Saleh had neither requested a residency permit nor applied as many suggested for asylum.
It conceded that a visa had been issued to Saleh as he was on his way to the United States of America for medical treatment as officials felt they were helping Yemen transition through the final stage of its power-transfer.
Officials refused to clarify whether they would consider granting Saleh’s asylum if he deposited a demand, only pointing out that since Ethiopia was home to great many Yemenis, the government would have to carefully weigh the potential repercussions of such a “political and controversial” decision.
Meanwhile, the General People’s Congress is still calling Saleh’s forecasted departure from Yemen “ludicrous and science fictional.”
Amongst other rumors, President Saleh was said to travel to Oman or the UAE as several members of his family had already bought luxurious residences in preparation for their departure from power.
